ABOUT GA CLINICIANS FOR GUN SAFETY

There are many successful organizations focused on gun violence in the US. What is the advantage or rationale for this group? Our identity as Georgia Healthcare workers gives us credibility and leverage that other groups may not have here. We have lived experiences of caring for victims of gun violence along with knowing the science/research behind interventions that work. Many healthcare workers have become frustrated, angry or even depressed over the direction things seem to be going. But we’ve seen evidence that healthcare workers can coalesce and mobilize in meaningful ways. Just last February a coalition of advocates united behind several bills intended to reduce gun violence. This was followed by a meeting with Senator Ossoff and close contact with other legislators in Georgia. We’ve learned that we have a unique and valued perspective on this issue. But we’ve just begun to leverage this potential.
